Generic Android boxes such as the X96, T95 and H96 families can run AromaOtt Player if they run Android 7.1 or newer: install the APK from aromaott.com/apk with Downloader, the browser or a USB stick, and sign in with a code from your phone. Expect HD channels to play well; HEVC and 4K depend on the box's chip, and from version 2.2.7 Texture video output helps boxes that cut in full screen.
What should I expect from a generic box?
These boxes are sold under many names with many different insides. Two boxes with the same name can have different chips and firmware. In practice:
- HD channels in common formats play on almost all of them.
- HEVC (H.265) and 4K depend on the chip. Some decode them smoothly, some only at low bitrates, some not at all.
- Firmware is often an adapted Android build. Menus differ from Android TV, and some boxes never get updates.
The Android version and the resolution printed on the box are not always what the box really runs. Check Settings → About on the box itself.
How do I install the app?
If the box has Google Play:
- Install Downloader from Google Play.
- Allow Downloader to install unknown apps, usually under Settings → Security or Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps. Names vary by firmware version.
- Type aromaott.com/apk in Downloader and select Go, then Install and Open.
If it has no Google Play: open the box's browser, go to aromaott.com/apk, open the downloaded file and allow the browser to install it. Or copy the APK from a computer with a USB stick.
Then sign in: approve the 8-character code on your phone at aromaott.com/activate.
Which settings help on these boxes?
In the player:
- From version 2.2.7, Settings → Player → Video output: if full screen cuts or flickers while the preview is fine, choose Texture. If playback then becomes less smooth, return to Automatic.
- Keep Match TV refresh rate (from 2.2.7) off unless motion judders and the box handles switching well.
- Buffer size: Automatic by default since 2.2.5; choose Large on Wi-Fi.
- Live stream format: try HLS if a channel does not start on MPEG-TS.
On the box:
- Turn off Auto frame rate, HDMI self-adaption or Auto display mode if the screen blanks at channel changes. Names vary by firmware version.
- Set the output resolution to what your TV really supports, for example 1080p at 50 or 60 Hz on an HD set.
Why does my box get slower over time?
Cheap boxes often have little memory and get warm. Heat can make the chip slow down, which shows as stutter after some minutes of play. Keep the box in open air, not behind the TV or in a closed cabinet, and restart it now and then. Since version 2.2.6, very large playlists open at once and use far less memory, which helps boxes with little of it.
Is a cable better than Wi-Fi?
Usually yes. Most of these boxes have an Ethernet port, and a cable avoids the weak Wi-Fi many cheap boxes have. Use it for live channels where you can.
When is the box the problem?
If a channel has sound but no picture on the box but plays on a phone or a newer stick, the box's chip cannot decode it. If every channel cuts on the box but plays elsewhere on the same network, the box's network or firmware is the likely cause. Settings → About → Diagnostics shows the last plays with stalls and reconnects; copy it for whoever manages your account.
