AromaOtt Player on an LG smart TV: browser or a stick

LG TVs run webOS and cannot install Android apps. Use the web player in the LG browser with a phone-code sign-in, or add a stick or box to run the app.

AromaOtt Player cannot be installed on an LG smart TV, because LG sets run webOS rather than Android. Open aromaott.com in the LG's browser, sign in with a code from your phone, and the web player opens in TV mode for the remote. For steadier live playback and more stream formats, plug in a Fire TV Stick or an Android TV device and install the app there.

Why can I not install the app on an LG?

AromaOtt Player is an Android app. LG sets, from small kitchen screens to 75-inch living-room models, use LG's own webOS, which runs only apps made for it. You will not find the player in LG's app store, and webOS has no way to open an APK file.

How do I open the web player on an LG TV?

  1. Press the home button and open the browser. On most LG sets it is called Web Browser. Names vary by webOS version.
  2. Select the address bar and type aromaott.com.
  3. A code screen appears, Sign in on this TV, with eight characters and a QR code. Landed on the usual sign-in page instead? Pick Member sign-in and then Sign in with a code.
  4. Approve it from your phone: scan the QR code, or go to aromaott.com/activate, enter the eight characters and confirm with Yes, sign in.
  5. The web player opens in TV mode.

The code is valid for 10 minutes and works once.

How do I use the LG remote in the web player?

Many LG remotes have a pointer that follows your hand. The web player's TV mode is built for the arrow keys: they move the highlighted item, OK opens it and Back goes back. If the pointer appears, press an arrow key and it hides again. The scroll wheel can scroll long columns, but the arrow keys and the A–Z strip are quicker in big lists.

What works, and what does not?

Works:

  • Your playlist's Live TV, Movies and Series, searchable by category and by channel.
  • Resume points and watched marks saved with your account; My List kept in that browser.
  • Switching playlists if your account has several.

Does not work, or depends on the model:

  • Some formats. The LG browser may not play HEVC video or some broadcast audio formats. It varies by model and year.
  • http playlists. Video from an http address cannot load inside a secure https page. The web player then routes it through our server and says so, or hands over to the HTTP player, its plain http page. The LG browser and your provider both have a say in whether that plays.
  • App settings. Buffer size, live stream format and, from version 2.2.7, the refresh-rate and video-output settings are only in the Android app.

When should I add a stick?

A stick is worth it when the LG browser keeps cutting or refuses some channels, or when your line allows a single connection and needs the app's steadier live handling. Any Fire TV Stick from the 2nd generation on, or an Android TV device, will do. Connect it to a free HDMI port, pick that input on the LG, and follow the guide for that device.

Which LG settings matter with a stick?

The LG's own picture menu still applies to the stick's picture. Motion processing, often called TruMotion or found under picture options with names that vary by webOS version, can be worth switching off for live channels if fast motion shows artefacts. Refresh-rate switching is then done by the stick, not by the LG.

Does the LG count as one of my devices?

Yes, the browser takes one device place on your account. Use Sign out in the account menu to free it. Clearing the browser's data signs you out and may make it count as a new device next time.

Questions and answers

Can I install the APK on an LG TV?

No. LG sets run webOS, which cannot install Android apps, so aromaott.com/apk cannot be used on the TV itself. The web player in the browser works without installing anything.

Does the pointer of the LG remote work in the web player?

The web player is made for the arrow keys, OK and Back. On remotes with a pointer, the arrow keys are the steadier way to move in TV mode.

Is a stick better than the LG browser?

For live channels, usually yes. The Android app plays more formats and has buffer and live-format settings. The browser is the quick way to try without buying anything.
